You may notice that we do not have any hybrid cars for sale. Hybrid cars made up the majority of cars sold by the Clean Green Car Company for the first five years or so of trading (over 500 hybrids sold). Since early 2009 it has proven almost impossible to import used hybrids from Japan at a price that works for the New Zealand car market. This is due to incentives that the Japanese government implemented to encourage the use and uptake of hybrid cars in Japan. Basically Japanese owners of hybrid cars benefit from a number of incentives including an exemption from paying the Japanese equivalent of their annual road registration tax. This tax is many times greater in Japan than New Zealand and has caused a substantial increase in the price of used hybrid cars in the Japanese domestic market to the point where it is no longer viable to buy and import them into the New Zealand Market. This may change in the future if the tax exemption and other incentive are removed (no road tolls, no parking fees etc) and if it does we will certainly be looking to again import hybrid cars - until them we have a selection of cars with some of the best fuel economy figures in their class.
